WA Labor to Boost Cost of Living Relief with Home Battery Scheme

Roger Cook and WA Labor will introduce Western Australia’s first residential battery scheme, helping families invest in home batteries and reduce their power bills.
The $387 million scheme will provide one of the nation’s most generous battery subsidies, cutting electricity costs, supporting local manufacturing jobs, and strengthening WA’s renewable energy network.
Starting July 1, 2025, Synergy customers will be eligible for one-off rebates of up to $5,000, while Horizon Power customers can access up to $7,500, with the amount based on battery size. Batteries must meet Australian and local grid standards, including both well-known brands and locally manufactured options.
The Residential Battery Scheme is expected to more than double the number of home battery installations in Western Australia. A no-interest loan program will also be available, allowing many households to access both subsidies and financial assistance.
The means-tested loan program will support up to 20,000 low and medium-income households, offering loans of up to $10,000 with a 10-year repayment period to cover upfront battery costs.
To further support local businesses, a re-elected Cook Labor Government will allocate $50 million to a Battery Manufacturing Program, which will offer grants and low-interest loans to encourage local production.
This initiative builds on the government’s previous cost of living relief measures, including household electricity credits and the installation of the state’s largest grid-connected battery storage system at Kwinana. The government is also committed to closing state-owned coal-fired power stations by 2030, contributing to a cleaner energy future for Western Australia.
Highlights of Premier Roger Cook’s Statement:
“Supercharging household batteries will revolutionise our electricity grid, allowing us to ramp up renewable energy, slash power bills and create quality manufacturing jobs for WA’s future.”
“As we transition to a clean energy future, household batteries will play a crucial role in supporting more renewable energy in the grid and keeping our power system affordable and reliable.”
“These WA-first schemes will help thousands of Western Australian households play their part in WA’s clean energy transition – while saving up to $1,500 on their power bills year after year.”
“The residential batteries resulting from these programs are expected to deliver more than 200 megawatt hours of storage to WA’s electricity grid – the equivalent of the first stage of the Kwinana Big Battery.”
“Our no-interest loan program will further support uptake of our Residential Battery Scheme, helping people who may not be able to afford the upfront costs to also benefit from the ongoing power bill relief that a home battery provides.”
