Our team recently completed a large solar and battery installation for a retired customer who continues to operate a personal workshop from his property. Due to the nature of his work, the workshop requires significant electricity usage throughout the day, particularly when operating power tools and machinery.
With electricity prices continuing to rise, the customer was seeking a long-term solution to reduce operating costs while also improving energy independence. His primary objective was to install a large solar system capable of supporting both his household consumption and the ongoing energy requirements of the workshop.
During the site assessment, we carefully evaluated the available roof space and identified several suitable areas for panel placement. One section of the roof faced south, which is not typically optimal for solar production in the southern hemisphere. To maximise energy generation from this area, we installed 11 panels using a north-facing tilt frame, allowing them to capture optimal sunlight throughout the day.
The remaining panels were strategically distributed across the roof to complete the full system while ensuring balanced generation and optimal system performance.

To further future-proof the installation, the customer opted to include a bidirectional DC EV charger. This allows an electric vehicle to be charged directly using solar energy generated during the day. In addition, the bidirectional capability enables future vehicle-to-home functionality, allowing stored energy from an EV battery to potentially support household loads when required.
The system is supported by a 40 kWh battery, providing substantial energy storage capacity. This enables excess solar energy generated during the day to be stored and used later in the evening or during periods of lower solar production. For the customer, this is particularly beneficial as it allows much of the workshop’s energy demand to be supplied from stored solar power rather than relying on grid electricity.
Following installation and system commissioning, the system was monitored to confirm that:
Since installation, the system has provided the customer with a reliable and efficient energy solution capable of supporting both household usage and the workshop’s operational requirements.
The customer has reported noticeably lower electricity costs and is extremely satisfied with the system’s performance. The addition of large battery storage and EV-ready infrastructure has also positioned the property for future energy needs.
Overall, the system is operating as designed and delivering both financial savings and long-term energy independence for the customer.
